The Suicide Prevention Action Network (SPAN) Town Hall brings together community organizations, partners, and advocates to strengthen collaboration, share resources, and celebrate the collective work being done to prevent suicide in our community.

Recently, Family & Children Services received the Suicide Safe Organization Seal, which recognizes local organizations in Kalamazoo County that are committed to suicide prevention and supporting individuals in crisis. Organizations that earn this designation have taken an important step by ensuring that at least two full-time staff members have completed a two-day ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training). Or have hosted evidence-based suicide prevention trainings for their teams.

We want to recognize our staff members Susan Davis and Angela Mucha for their work in this area!

Recently we hosted over 500 people at our Client Picnic! This year’s picnic featured a petting zoo, Kona ice, a delicious meal, face painting, raffle items, donated items clients could get their fill of, chair massages for parents and caregivers, and a resource fair with community partners educating clients on how to utilize their resources. On top of all of that, WMed students held a Critter Clinic, where our clients learned about first aid, vaccinations, and more - and could take their stuffed critters through the processes!

Every year we prioritize this event knowing clients can sometimes come to us in their hardest moments. We want to ensure they know we want to be there and support them in some of their great moments, too.

So thank you to the committee who organized our biggest Client Picnic yet. Thank you to the other staff, volunteers, donors, and vendors who attended. Mostly, thank you to our clients for taking the time to come!

Thank you so much to our community partners who came to our Scoop and Serve event yesterday. It was wonderful to spend time with you all in person.

Strong alliances between nonprofits make for a stronger community. That's why we spend so much time meeting and learning from local leaders to see where our strengths as an agency can be most useful in strengthening the well-being of our community. Thankfully, we work in Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties where nonprofits are increasingly coming together to pool resources, people power, and brainstorming to affect real change for those who need it most.
