We are proud of the work our Foster Care team does on behalf of the foster children and foster parents in our care. On Saturday, a team from Family & Children Services participated in the Gryphon Place Suicide Prevention Walk in Kalamazoo. The 5K cause-walk raises awareness for suicide prevention and provides critical funds for Gryphon Place in their work to prevent suicide. Their goal aligns with ours: they're fighting for a better future. For those affected by suicide. For open conversations about mental health. For prevention.

If you or someone you know needs support, call our office at 269.344.0202 or email outpatient@fcsource.org.

This week our Wellness Committee had a relay challenge for staff. Puzzles, team challenges, and staff bonding were all at play to break up the typical work day. It was so much fun to get out on a nice September day and mingle with different program staff than the ones we typically see each day!

Congratulations to team “Spark” who won the whole thing. And thank you to the Wellness Committee for constantly coming up with inventive ways to get us to move our bodies, create peace in our minds, and enjoy each other and our work days!

This Wednesday CEO Diane Marquess attended the Walk a Mile in My Shoes rally for Mental Health in Lansing. The walk was to enhance public awareness and educate legislators about why mental health matters, end stigma related to intellectual /
developmental disabilities, mental illness, and substance use disorders, and promote mental health and wellness.

More than 300,000 Michiganders rely on the public behavioral health system for affordable and quality healthcare. Without funding for public mental health service sites, families’ out-of-pocket expenses increase, and vulnerable populations like low-income families, veterans, and the elderly are at risk of losing critical access to care.

At Family & Children Services we are proud to be one of our community’s mental health providers. Ensuring our local, statewide, and national legislators understand the importance of community mental health is vital in our vision that mental health services are available to those who need them. September is also Kinship Awareness Month in which we celebrate the relatives or close friends who provide a safe home for children. In Michigan, there are approximately 4,800 children in foster care being raised by kin.

Kinship foster care is a growing program here at Family & Children Services and we are so grateful for the ways these families have stepped up when children needed them most. We provide resources to these families, of course, but Michigan has also made it easy for Kinship families to find and receive support with their Kinship Care Resource Center.
