My Professional Philosophy:
I believe that all people, whether children or adults, seek a sense of respect and belonging. I believe that change in identified challenges comes through encouraging individuals to communicate feelings, needs, and wishes in effective ways, and teaching skills needed to move toward their goals.
I have worked as a mental health clinician in Kalamazoo for over 30 years. I have worked with individuals and families in the areas of developmental disabilities, mental health, attachment, parenting, and behavior issues. I attend trainings in a variety of areas on a regular basis to enhance my professional skills, and have provided trainings in behavior management and positive parenting practices.
My special interests are working with elementary school age children who are experiencing emotional and behavioral issues. I use play therapy to help children process their experiences and to understand and build on the strengths within them. I am also especially interested in parenting issues, including working with parents of children involved in the child welfare system, and parents of infants and toddlers.
I received a BA from Western Michigan University, with a major in Social Work and minors in Psychology and Family Life Education, and a MA in Counseling from Western Michigan University. I hold current licenses as a Professional Counselor (LPC) and Masters Social Worker (LMSW) in the State of Michigan.
