My Professional Philosophy:
My philosophy as a clinician centers on respect for each individual who receives services from me and that person’s path to growth and change. Goals are developed collaboratively and interventions are individualized for each client. I make a strong effort to include family members, especially caregivers, in a child’s treatment process.
I have worked as a mental health therapist in Kalamazoo for 30 years. My career has focused on working with children and families and has included work in the field of domestic violence, as well as child welfare. Throughout my career, I have continued to grow and evolve in my clinical work and have received ongoing training relevant to the work that I do. I have provided trainings to community groups, including Continuing Education through Western Michigan University’s School of Social Work.
My area of interest and expertise is working with children. This includes helping children and families resolve school problems, parent-child relationship issues and anxiety/depression/mood disorders. I have worked extensively with young victims of trauma and my treatment approach includes both cognitive-behavioral and expressive interventions. I have been involved in the development and implementation of the trauma assessment program at Family and Children’s Services which provides information and recommendations for caregivers and service providers regarding the impact that a history of trauma has had on the life of a child.
I received a BA from Kalamazoo College and a MA in Counseling from Western Michigan University. I am licensed as a Professional Counselor (LPC) and also a Masters Level Social Worker (LMSW), both from the State of Michigan.
